Wirkkala was perhaps Finland’s most famous internationally known designer. He brought his optimistic minimalism to thousands of objects from banknotes to cutlery, from plastic to porcelain. One of Wirkkala’s most popular designs for Rosenthal, the Paper Bag Vase takes a pedestrian and transient found object and converts it into an object of beauty, wit and permanence. In this way, it is certainly a reflection of the Pop Art movement’s elevation of the mundane.
