Inspired by the raw nature of Lapland where famed Finnished designer Tapio Wirkkala spent time, the bowl mimics melting ice, snow, and glacial pools. Lompolo is a Finnish term for a wide, lake-like expansion or pool in a river.
Molten clear glass was gathered and blown into a specialized mould to create the basic, thick, and irregular asymmetrical shape and then craftsmen ground and cut flat facets along the outer sides of the heavy glass body.

Incised signature to underside 'Tapio Wirkkala 61/1984' indicating it was the 61st piece produced in 1984.
