Steven Holl is an American Architect based in NYC whose designs rather than imposing a particular style are often informed by their site. The Stretto House in Dallas and his work on the campus of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston are among his many notable designs. With these candlesticks designed for Swid Powell in the 1980s, Holl explored materiality by acid coating the metal to achieve the green patina. He also considered space when he set the candlesticks high so that one might see through them when seated.
