Paolo Portoghesi is an early Italian Post-modern architect, theorist, historian, and professor based in Rome. This is one of two candleholders he designed for Alessi in 1985 that were produced in 1988 inspired by the design of the Algerian Tlemcen Mosque. Portoghesi employed a nearly identical design to the columns in Grande Mosque of Rome in 1994.
