Paolo Portoghesi is an early Italian Post-modern architect, theorist, historian, and professor based in Rome. These are one of two candleholder designs he created for Alessi in 1985 and produced in 1988 that were inspired by the design of the Algerian Tlemcen Mosque. Portoghesi employed a nearly identical design to the columns in Grande Mosque of Rome in 1994.
