Mario Botta was born in 1943 in Mendrisio, Switzerland. In his work he took inspiration from such masters as Le Corbusier, Louis I. Kahn, and Carlo Scarpa, whom he met during his studies in Venice. He is known for buildings of masonary that often include cylindrical forms and bands of color. His black and white Shogun lamp for Artemide is a design classic.
The angled cylinders of Botta's Mia and Tua pitchers for Alessi recall the central element of his late 1980s deisgn for the SFMOMA. Mia [mine] is the shorter of the two – its handle juts above its angled opening. It is not currently in production.
