Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007) is most often associated with his iconic red Olivetti Valentine typewriter from the 1960s and founding the Postmodern Milan-based Memphis Group in the 1980s. He created a vast body of work including buildings and interiors, furniture, machines, ceramics, glass, jewelry, textiles and patterns. Made of resin and wood composite to channel the warmth and durability of traditional Japanese Urushi or laquer ware, “Senape” is one of five vessels Sottsass designed for Japanese firm MaruTomi. It is a perfect mashup of traditional Japanese techniques, modern materials and Sottsass’ playful approach to shape and color.
