Norman Wilson Wedgwood Large Fluted Bowl
Norman Wilson | Wedgwood | Moonstone Glazed Earthenware with Black Slip | UK | 1950s | 3.265” H x 8.375” Diameter | $1,475
Fine china, porcelain, and luxury accessories manufacturer Wedgwood was founded in 1759 by the English potter and entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood. Becoming successful quickly, it was soon one of the largest manufacturers of Staffordshire pottery, exporting across Europe, Russia, and to the Americas.
Wedgwood is well known for the unglazed stoneware Jasperware[especially in "Wedgwood blue"] that has been in continuous production from 1775 though it was table china in the refined earthenware creamwarethat represented most of the sales in the 18 th and 19th centuries. Wedgwood continued to flourish in the 19th and early 20th centuries though it contracted, along with the rest of the English pottery industry, after WWII.
Norman Wilson was a master potter, designer and inventor. Frank Wedgwood appointed him Works Manager at the Etruria factory in 1927. Wilson introduced gas-fired tunnel ovens at the factory and from 1930-1960, produced a wide range of forms and glazes. This bowl’s graphic black and white fluted design and stepped foot evoke the midcentury aesthetic of the 1950s.
