Bertil Vallien trained primarily as a potter in his native Sweden, taught by none other than Stig Lindberg. He began his career as a ceramicist in Los Angeles in the early 1960s to a fair amount of acclaim, but returned to Sweden a few years later to begin working in glass, the medium he would become most well known for. This vase design was the offspring of Vallien's Terra animal series he created for Rörstrand in 1978. The vase's seemingly primitive shape and decoration lends it an artisinal, hand-made appearance.
