Bertil Vallien trained primarily as a potter in his native Sweden, taught by none other than Stig Lindberg. He began his career as a ceramicist in Los Angeles in the early 1960s to a fair amount of acclaim but returned to Sweden a few years later to begin working in glass, the medium he would become most well known for. This horsel figure was part of Vallien's animal series he created for Rörstrand in 1978. Its seemingly primitive shape, decoration, and coloring lends it an artisanal, hand-made appearance.
